Basaseachi Falls in Copper Canyon Mexico
At the head of Candameña Canyon, Basaseachi Falls, with a drop of 246 meters (812 feet) and located within Basaseachi National Park, this is the second highest waterfall in Mexico. Basaseachic Falls is located in the high mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, in the Municipality of Ocampo, 3 km. (1.86 miles) from Basaseachi community and about 265 km. (165 miles) west of Chihuahua and it's just about 3.5 hours from Creel. The fall is made by two streams, Arroyo del Durazno (Durazno stream) and Arroyo de Basaseachic (Basaseachic Stream), which merge in the high mountain and then fall down the canyon. Past the fall, the stream is called Río Candameña (Candamena River), as well as the canyon it flows through, the Candamena River contributes to the formation of Río Mayo (Mayo River). Basaseachi Falls was deemed for a certain time period as the tallest fall in México, until the discovery in September, 1994 of the Cascada de Piedra Volada. However, Piedra Volada flows only during the rainy season, while Basaseachi flows year-round. The Fall's surroundings are known for their beauty, such as rock formations and pine woods. It can be viewed from several vantage points along the walking trail. Hike down to, and swim in, the pool at its base.
Best Times to See Basaseachi Falls in Copper Canyon
The best time to visit the Basaseachi Falls is between March and April and October and November. During this time the vegetation and rivers are full, especially during early fall just after the rainy season. During these months the entire Copper Canyon area is packed and you will need to book a hotel in advance. If you are looking to avoid the crowds, then the rainy season between May and September is the best time to experience the Copper Canyon without heavy crowds. During the rainy season the Copper Canyon comes alive, offering the heaviest water flow filling the rivers, making for amazing waterfalls and lush green vegetation. Understand that the Copper Canyon area has two distinct climate zones alpine in the highlands, with mild temperatures April-October with rain showers July -September and colder November - March with some snowfall, and subtropical in the canyon bottoms. The worst months to see the Copper Canyon area is during May and June, which are generally dry months. Water shortages are common, the land is arid and dry.
